RESUMO

Heterogeneous interface and defect engineering offer effective pathways to accelerate oxygen evolution reaction (OER) charge transfer kinetics and motivate optimal intrinsic catalytic activity. Herein, we report the lattice-matched NiO/NiFe2O4 heterostructure with ample oxygen vacancies (Vo-NiO/NiFe2O4) induced by a feasible hydrothermal followed by calcination and plasma-engraving assistant technique, which shows the unique porous microflower arrangement of intertwined nanosheets. Benefitting from the synergetic effects between lattice-matched heterointerface and oxygen vacancies induce the strong electronic coupling, optimized OH-/O2 diffusion pathway and ample active sites, thus-prepared Vo-NiFe2O4 presents a favorable OER performance with a low overpotential (261 mV @ 10 mA cm-2) and small Tafel slope (39.4 mV dec-1), even surpassing commercial RuO2 catalyst. Additionally, the two-electrode configuration water electrolyzer and rechargeable zinc-air battery assembled by Vo-NiO/NiFe2O4 catalyst show the potential practical application directions. This work provides an innovative avenue for strengthening OER performance toward water electrolysis and Zn-air batteries via the interface and vacancy engineering strategy.

BACKGROUND: Understanding cancer patients' unmet needs for chemotherapy-related symptom management will assist clinicians in developing tailored intervention programs. Little is known about the association between perceived communication efficacy and unmet care needs for symptom management in patients with lung and colorectal cancer. OBJECTIVES: To examine the unmet care needs for symptom management of patients with lung and colorectal cancer and their association with perceived communication efficacy. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in a tertiary hospital in China from July to November 2020. A convenience sample of 203 patients with lung and colorectal cancer undergoing chemotherapy completed survey questionnaires, including the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory Scale and the Perceived Efficacy in Patient‒Physician Interactions Scale. RESULTS: Approximately 43% of participants had at least one symptom with unmet needs. Fatigue was reported as the symptom with the highest occurrence (66%), the highest demand for supportive care (36%), and the highest prevalence of unmet needs (19%). Low levels of perceived communication efficacy independently predicted participants' unmet needs for symptom management (ß=-0.13, p = 0.011). CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the necessity of introducing clinical assessment tools and guidelines to address fatigue and other chemotherapy-induced symptoms in patients with lung and colorectal cancer. Clinical programs designed to actively engage cancer patients to voice their needs and strengthen their communication efficacy are also warranted.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) causes severe bone loss after tooth extraction as a hyperglycemic environment causes aberrant bone homeostasis. Artesunate (ART) is known to possess anti-inflammation and osteogenic properties. However, its osteogenesis property in alveolar bone remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the osteogenic and immunoregulatory effects of artesunate-loaded thermosensitive chitosan hydrogel (ART-loaded TCH) on maxilla tooth extraction in T2DM rats. METHODS: T2DM rats were induced by a high-fat diet and streptozotocin. Different concentrations of ART-loaded TCH were applied in tooth extraction sockets. Bone loss and the expression of osteogenic regulatory factors (OPG, ALP, RANK) were evaluated. The immunoregulatory effects of ART-loaded TCH were observed through detecting the infiltration of T lymphocytes and their cytokines. The underlying mechanisms were explored. RESULTS: Results showed that the 150 mg/ml ART-loaded TCH group significantly ameliorated maxilla bone height and bone mineral density when compared with the T2DM group (p < 0.05). It also improved the expression of OPG, ALP, and RANK. Although the alteration of CD4+ T, CD8+ T, and CD4+:CD8+ T ratio has no significant difference among groups, the release of Th1 and Th2 in the 150 mg/ml ART-loaded TCH group has been significantly regulated than in the T2DM group (p < 0.05). Besides, ART-loaded TCH treatment inhibited the expression of p38 MAPK and ERK1 in T2DM maxilla. CONCLUSIONS: Therefore, the results indicated that 150 mg/ml ART-loaded TCH could be an effective method to prevent bone loss in T2DM tooth extraction rats by modulating the immunoregulation of Th1 and Th2 and the MAPK signaling pathway.

The pursuit of efficient cathode catalysts to improve cycle stability at ultra-high rates plays an important role in boosting the practical utilization of Li-O2 batteries. Featured as industrial solid waste, coal gangue with rich electrochemical active components could be a promising candidate for electrocatalysts. Here, a coal gangue/Ti3C2 MXene hybrid with a TiO2/SiCx active layer is synthesized and applied as a cathode catalyst in Li-O2 batteries. The coal gangue/Ti3C2 MXene hybrid has a tailored amorphous/crystalline heterostructure, enhanced active TiO2 termination, and a stable SiCx protective layer; thereby, it achieved an excellent rate stability. The Li-O2 battery, assembled with a coal gangue/Ti3C2 MXene cathode catalyst, was found to obtain a competitive full discharge capacity of 3959 mAh g-1 and a considerable long-term endurance of 180 h (up to 175 cycles), with a stable voltage polarization of 1.72 V at 2500 mA g-1. Comprehensive characterization measurements (SEM, TEM, XPS, etc.) were applied; an in-depth analysis was conducted to reveal the critical role of TiO2/SiCX active units in regulating the micro-chemical constitution and the enhanced synergistic effect between coal gangue and Ti3C2 MXene. This work could provide considerable insights into the rational design of catalysts derived from solid waste gangue for high-rate Li-O2 batteries.

Purpose: Postoperative cognitive dysfunction (POCD) is a central nervous system complication that occurs after anesthesia, particularly among the elderly. However, the neurological pathogenesis of postoperative cognitive dysfunction remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of sevoflurane exposure on serum metabolites and hippocampal gene expression in elderly patients and aging mice by metabolomics and transcriptomic analysis and to explore the pathogenesis of sevoflurane induced POCD. Patients and Methods: Human serum samples from five patients over 60 years old were collected before sevoflurane anesthesia and 1 hour after anesthesia. Besides, mice aged at 12 months (n=6 per group) were anesthetized with sevoflurane for 2 hours or with sham procedure. Subsequently, serum and hippocampal tissues were harvested for analysis. Further investigation into the relationship between isatin and neuroinflammation was conducted using BV2 microglial cells. Results: Sevoflurane anesthesia led to the activation of inflammatory pathways, an increased presence of hippocampal astrocytes and microglia, and elevated expression of neuroinflammatory cytokines. Comparative analysis identified 12 differential metabolites that exhibited changes in both human and mouse serum post-sevoflurane anesthesia. Notably, isatin levels were significantly decreased after anesthesia. Notably, isatin levels significantly decreased after anesthesia, a factor known to stimulate proliferation and proinflammatory gene expression in microglia-the pivotal cell type in inflammatory responses. Conclusion: Sevoflurane-induced alterations in serum metabolites in both elderly patients and aging mice, subsequently contributing to increased inflammation in the hippocampus.

PCOS is a widespread disease that primarily caused in-pregnancy in pregnant-age women. Normoandrogen (NA) and Hyperandrogen (HA) PCOS are distinct subtypes of PCOS, while bio-markers and expression patterns for NA PCOS and HA PCOS have not been disclosed. We performed microarray analysis on granusola cells from NA PCOS, HA PCOS and normal tissue from 12 individuals. Afterwards, microarray data were processed and specific genes for NA PCOS and HA PCOS were identified. Further functional analysis selected IL6R and CD274 as new NA PCOS functional markers, and meanwhile selected CASR as new HA PCOS functional marker. IL6R, CD274 and CASR were afterwards experimentally validated on mRNA and protein level. Subsequent causal relationship analysis based on Apriori Rules Algorithm and co-occurrence methods identified classification markers for NA PCOS and HA PCOS. According to classification markers, downloaded transcriptome datasets were merged with our microarray data. Based on merged data, causal knowledge graph was constructed for NA PCOS or HA PCOS and female infertility on NA PCOS and HA PCOS. Gene-drug interaction analysis was then performed and drugs for HA PCOS and NA PCOS were predicted. Our work was among the first to indicate the NA PCOS and HA PCOS functional and classification markers and using markers to construct knowledge graphs and afterwards predict drugs for NA PCOS and HA PCOS based on transcriptome data. Thus, our study possessed biological and clinical value on further understanding the inner mechanism on the difference between NA PCOS and HA PCOS.

Heavy metal (HM) enrichment is closely related to soil organic carbon (SOC) pools in terrestrial ecosystems, which are deeply intertwined with soil microbial processes. However, the influence of HMs on SOC remains contentious in terms of magnitude and direction. A global analysis of 155 publications was conducted to integrate the synergistic responses of SOC and microorganisms to HM enrichment. A significant increase of 13.6 % in SOC content was observed in soils exposed to HMs. The response of SOC to HMs primarily depends on soil properties and habitat conditions, particularly the initial SOC content, mean annual precipitation (MAP), initial soil pH, and mean annual temperature (MAT). The presence of HMs resulted in significant decreases in the activities of key soil enzymes, including 31.9 % for soil dehydrogenase, 24.8 % for ß-glucosidase, 35.8 % for invertase, and 24.3 % for cellulose. HMs also exerted inhibitory effects on microbial biomass carbon (MBC) (26.6 %), microbial respiration (MR) (19.7 %), and the bacterial Shannon index (3.13 %) but elevated the microbial metabolic quotient (qCO2) (20.6 %). The HM enrichment-induced changes in SOC exhibited positive correlations with the response of MBC (r = 0.70, p < 0.01) and qCO2 (r = 0.50, p < 0.01), while it was negatively associated with ß-glucosidase activity (r = 0.72, p < 0.01) and MR (r = 0.39, p < 0.01). These findings suggest that the increase in SOC storage is mainly attributable to the inhibition of soil enzymes and microorganisms under HM enrichment. Overall, this meta-analysis highlights the habitat-dependent responses of SOC to HM enrichment and provides a comprehensive evaluation of soil carbon dynamics in an HM-rich environment.

BACKGROUND: Patients with advanced cancer may experience symptom clusters during treatment (eg, fatigue, pain, sleep disturbance, depression). Understanding the characteristics and factors associated with symptom cluster classes among this patient population is essential for effective symptom management. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to identify symptom cluster (fatigue-pain-sleep disturbance-depression) classes and explore influencing factors in patients with advanced cancer during the treatment. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted in an oncology department of a tertiary hospital in China from September 2020 to March 2021. Cancer patients (stage III/IV) 18 years or older completed the questionnaires on pain, fatigue, sleep disturbance, depression, physical activity, and exercise self-efficacy. Latent class analysis and multinomial logistic regression were used. RESULTS: Three hundred sixty-five patients who were male (65.2%) and younger than 60 years (59.5%) completed questionnaires. Three symptom cluster classes were identified: class 1 ("low symptom burden" class), class 2 ("fatigue-insomnia" class), and class 3 ("high symptom burden" class), with a percentage of 54.5%, 38.6%, and 6.8%, respectively. The quality-of-life score, introversion/extroversion, economic burden, Karnofsky Performance Status, albumin level, and exercise self-efficacy were significantly different among the 3 classes (P < .05). CONCLUSION: Patients with advanced cancer were classified into 3 distinct classes, with class 1 having the best function. Results from this study reveal that Karnofsky Performance Status, albumin level, and exercise self-efficacy were significant factors for the latent classes of symptom cluster. IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE: Exercise self-efficacy is important for personalized interventions and improving symptom management efficiency.

Clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC) represents a frequent subtype of kidney cancer, with the prognosis remaining poor for individuals with metastatic disease. Given its resistance to both radiation and chemotherapy, targeted therapies and immunotherapies have emerged as critical for effective ccRCC treatment. Within this context, the SNARE protein STX4, which is associated with malignant cancer cell migration, provides a promising focus. The underlying mechanism, however, requires further illumination. Furthermore, the influence of STX4 on the ccRCC tumor microenvironment remains to be determined. In our research, we utilized multiple databases and immunohistochemical staining to confirm differential STX4 expression and its prognostic implications. We evaluated the potential tumor-promoting function of STX4 in ccRCC cell lines through molecular studies. Additionally, we conducted functional enrichment analysis to delve deeper into the underlying mechanisms and performed immune infiltration and drug sensitivity analyses to assess the potential of STX4 as a prognostic biomarker and therapeutic target. Our study reveals that STX4 contributes to cancer progression by enhancing AKT expression and stimulating the activation of VEGF signaling pathways. Additionally, STX4 further fosters CD8+ T-cell infiltration and diminishes the percentage of CAFs and M2-TAMs. Our findings suggest that patients presenting higher STX4 levels may exhibit enhanced responsiveness to immunotherapy and higher sensitivity to the medications axitinib and everolimus. Finally, we propose STX4 expression assessment as a novel approach to predict patient response to respective immunotherapies and targeted treatments, hence potentially improving patient outcomes.

Endocrine resistance is a crucial challenge in estrogen receptor alpha (ERα)-positive breast cancer (BCa). Aberrant alteration in modulation of E2/ERα signaling pathway has emerged as the putative contributor for endocrine resistance in BCa. Herein, we demonstrate that MYSM1 as a deubiquitinase participates in modulating ERα action via histone and non-histone deubiquitination. MYSM1 is involved in maintenance of ERα stability via ERα deubiquitination. MYSM1 regulates relevant histone modifications on cis regulatory elements of ERα-regulated genes, facilitating chromatin decondensation. MYSM1 is highly expressed in clinical BCa samples. MYSM1 depletion attenuates BCa-derived cell growth in xenograft models and increases the sensitivity of antiestrogen agents in BCa cells. A virtual screen shows that the small molecule Imatinib could potentially interact with catalytic MPN domain of MYSM1 to inhibit BCa cell growth via MYSM1-ERα axis. These findings clarify the molecular mechanism of MYSM1 as an epigenetic modifier in regulation of ERα action and provide a potential therapeutic target for endocrine resistance in BCa.

Heavy metals (HMs) profoundly impact soil carbon storage potential primarily through soil carbon structure. The association between HM content and soil carbon structure in mangrove sediments remains unclear, likely due to the involvement of microorganisms. In this study, surface sediments in the Futian National Mangrove Nature Reserve were sampled to investigate the chemical structure of soil organic carbon (SOC), the molecular composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM), and potential interactions with microorganisms. HMs, except for Ni, were positively correlated with soil carbon. HMs significantly reduced the alkyl C/O-alkyl C ratio, aromaticity index, and aromatic C values, but increased the labile carboxy/amide C and carbonyl C ratio in SOC. HMs also increased DOM stability, as reflected by the reduced abundance of labile DOM (lipids and proteins) and increased proportion of stable DOM (tannins and condensed aromatics). Bacteria increased the decomposition of labile DOM components (unsaturated hydrocarbons) and the accumulation of stable DOM components (lignins) under HM enrichment. In addition, the association between the bacterial groups and DOM molecules was more robust than that with fungal groups, indicating bacteria had a more significant impact on DOM molecular composition. These findings help in understanding the molecular mechanisms of soil carbon storage in HM-rich mangroves.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common malignancy worldwide with a poor prognosis. The therapeutic outcomes of HCC patients are urgently needed to be improved, and predictive biomarkers for the optimal treatment selection remains to be further defined. In the present study, our results showed that BPTF-associated protein of 18 KDa (BAP18) was highly expressed in HCC tissues. In cultured HCC cells, BAP18 regulated a subset of down-stream genes involved in different functions, particularly including peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR) pathway and lipid metabolism. Furthermore, BAP18 co-activated PPARα-mediated transactivation and facilitated the recruitment of nucleosome acetyltransferase of H4 (NuA4)/tat interacting protein 60 (TIP60) complex, thereby increasing histone H4 acetylation on stearoyl-CoA desaturase 1 (SCD1) loci. In addition, BAP18 promoted HCC cell proliferation, increased intracellular lipid levels and enhanced cell survival under the metabolic stress conditions, such as glucose limitation or tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) treatment. Importantly, higher BAP18 expression was positively correlated with the postoperative recurrence and the poor disease-free survival in clinical patients receiving sorafenib treatment. Altogether, we discovered that BAP18 plays an oncogenic role in the survival and proliferation of HCC cells, and BAP18 may serve as a predictive biomarker for adjunct TKIs treatment in patients with HCC, and further facilitate the precise treatment.

Lithium-oxygen batteries (LOBs) with a theoretical energy density of up to 3500 Wh kg-1 hold a promise for the next-generation high-energy-density batteries. However, the slow oxygen reduction/evolution kinetics at the cathode limits the performance of Li-air batteries. The rational design of efficient catalysts is essential for the improvement of oxygen electrode reaction kinetics. Herein, we report a facile strategy to co-dope N and P atoms simultaneously into Ti3C2Tx (NP-Ti3C2Tx) MXene via an electrostatic self-assembly approach. The co-doped NP-Ti3C2Tx layers expose abundant active sites, providing more space for accommodating the formed Li2O2. Moreover, the N and P co-doping facilitates efficient electron transport in Ti3C2Tx MXene. The LOB with NP-Ti3C2TX catalyst delivers a high discharge capacity of 24,940 mAh/g at 1000 mA g-1. At a cut-off capacity of 1000 mAh/g, this battery runs continuously for 159, 276, 185, and 229 cycles at current densities of 1000, 2000, 3000, and 5000 mA g-1, respectively. Theoretical calculations unveil that N and P co-doping enables lower ηORR and ηOER of only 0.26 V and 0.13 V on Ti3C2Tx MXene, respectively. This work offers a feasible approach for constructing efficient MXene electrocatalysts for Li-air batteries.

Pancreatic cancer (PC) is one of the most malignant tumors with a dismal survival rate, this is primarily due to inevitable chemoresistance. Dysfunctional tyrosine kinases (TKs) and long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) affect the drug resistance and prognosis of PC. Here, we summarize the mechanisms by which TKs or lncRNAs mediate drug resistance and other malignant phenotypes. We also discuss that lncRNAs play oncogenic or tumor suppressor roles and different mechanisms including lncRNA-proteins/microRNAs to mediate drug resistance. Furthermore, we highlight that lncRNAs serve as upstream regulators of TKs mediating drug resistance. Finally, we display the clinical significance of TKs (AXL, EGFR, IGF1R, and MET), clinical trials, and lncRNAs (LINC00460, PVT1, HIF1A-AS1). In the future, TKs and lncRNAs may become diagnostic and prognostic biomarkers or drug targets to overcome the drug resistance of PC.

Point cloud data generated by LiDAR sensors play a critical role in 3D sensing systems, with applications encompassing object classification, part segmentation, and point cloud recognition. Leveraging the global learning capacity of dot product attention, transformers have recently exhibited outstanding performance in point cloud learning tasks. Nevertheless, existing transformer models inadequately address the challenges posed by uncertainty features in point clouds, which can introduce errors in the dot product attention mechanism. In response to this, our study introduces a novel global guidance approach to tolerate uncertainty and provide a more reliable guidance. We redefine the granulation and lower-approximation operators based on neighborhood rough set theory. Furthermore, we introduce a rough set-based attention mechanism tailored for point cloud data and present the rough set transformer (RST) network. Our approach utilizes granulation concepts derived from token clusters, enabling us to explore relationships between concepts from an approximation perspective, rather than relying on specific dot product functions. Empirically, our work represents the pioneering fusion of rough set theory and transformer networks for point cloud learning. Our experimental results, including point cloud classification and segmentation tasks, demonstrate the superior performance of our method. Our method establishes concepts based on granulation generated from clusters of tokens. Subsequently, relationships between concepts can be explored from an approximation perspective, instead of relying on specific dot product or addition functions. Empirically, our work represents the pioneering fusion of rough set theory and transformer networks for point cloud learning. Our experimental results, including point cloud classification and segmentation tasks, demonstrate the superior performance of our method.

We monitored CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) for Th1/Th2 inflammatory cytokines in a patient with unexplained postoperative disturbance of consciousness after craniotomy and found that the level of IL-6 (interleukin-6) concentrations was extremely high, meeting the traditional criteria for an inflammatory cytokine storm. Subsequently, the cerebrospinal fluid specimens of several patients were tested, and it was found that IL-6 levels were increased in different degrees after craniotomy. Previous studies have focused more on mild and long-term IL-6 elevation, but less on the effects of this short-term IL-6 inflammatory cytokine storm. Cerebrospinal fluid rich in IL-6 may play a significant role in patients after craniotomy. The objective is to explore the degree of IL-6 elevation and the incidence of IL-6 inflammatory cytokine storm in patients after craniotomy, as well as the effect of IL-6 elevation on the brain. In this study, the levels and clinical manifestations of inflammatory factors in cerebrospinal fluid after craniotomy were statistically classified, and the underlying mechanisms were discussed preliminarily. CSF specimens of patients after craniotomy were collected, IL-6 level was measured at 1, 5, and 10 days after operation, and cognitive function was analyzed at 1, 10, and 180 days after surgery. Craniotomy mouse model, cerebrospinal fluid of patients with the appearance of IL-6 storm after craniotomy, and IL-6 at the same concentration stimulation model were established. Behavioral tests, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), pathological means, western blot, and ELISA (enzyme-linked immune-sorbent assay) were performed for verification. CSF from patients after craniotomy caused disturbance of consciousness in mice, affected neuronal damage in the hypothalamus, activation of microglia in the hypothalamus, and decreased expression of barrier proteins in the hypothalamus and brain. The large amount of interleukin-6 in CSF after craniotomy was found to be mainly derived from astrocytes. The IL-6 level in CSF after craniotomy correlated inversely with patients' performance in MoCA test. High levels of IL-6 in the cerebrospinal fluid derived from astrocytes after craniotomy may lead to disruption of the brain-cerebrospinal fluid barrier, most notably around the hypothalamus, which might result in inflammatory activation of microglia to damage the hypothalamic neurons and impaired cognitive function/more gradual cognitive repairment in patients after craniotomy with the appearance of IL-6 storm.

The particulate backscattering coefficient (bbp) plays an important role in the growth of coral reefs by influencing the light field conditions. Small-scale optically shallow waters are commonly found in coastal fringing reefs, making it challenging to monitor the spatial and temporal patterns accurately using Aqua satellites with a low spatial resolution. In this study, six existing optimization-based algorithms for deriving bbp at 400 nm (bbp(400)) were evaluated with three simulated Landsat-8 (spatial resolution = 30 m) data sets and in situ data from the Luhuitou Peninsula, Sanya. The comparison results indicated that the HOPE (hyperspectral optimization process exemplar) (Fix-H-error or Fix-H-error-free) algorithm which sets an input value of the water depth alone outperformed other algorithms. However, the estimated bbp(400) from all the algorithms tended to be either overestimated and underestimated due to the improper the spectral shape value of the backscattering coefficient. The HOPE (Fix-H-error) algorithm estimated-bbp(400) from in situ reflectance also had a good correlation with the in situ total suspended particle concentrations data derived-bbp(400), with a correlation coefficient of 0.83. Therefore, the HOPE (Fix-H-error) algorithm was selected to estimate the bbp(400) from satellite-based Landsat-8 data of the Luhuitou Peninsula, Sanya. Time-series (2014-2021) results from these Landsat-8 images reveal the seasonal variation of bbp(400). The bbp(400) was low from May to September every year. From October to December or January, bbp(400) had an increasing trend, and then it decreased until May. Spatial analysis indicated that bbp(400) decreased with increasing water depth. The spatial and temporal patterns of bbp(400) were consistent with in situ observations reported in the literature. This study preliminarily showed the efficiency of an optimization-based algorithm in deriving bbp(400) in small-scale optically shallow water region using Landsat-8 data.
